Activity #7: Framing + Scale Quest

foofighters.com

This band is the Foo Fighters, an alternative/post-grunge hard rock band.

For their website, it is clear they try to display everything as minimally as possible and thus framing and scale different than how you would expect. On the home page, the frame is the information of the website. On the pages of the website with actual information, they use less than 50% of the page for clickable content. The framing of all the content is nice since everything is properly organized, however, the scale of everything doesn’t help draw my attention towards the important content.  It took me the longest time to realize that this home page wasn’t a glitch, however, after I got past that I still found the framing and scale rather abysmal. Although I’m not considering color for right now, the bland colors don’t help with scale of their content and similarly don’t allow for their framing to draw attention to the important aspects of their website.

The next band is Hollywood Undead, a hip-hop/rap rock band.

Their website had a lightly blurred background of the top half of their latest album cover and you can clearly see how they use framing and scale to design their page. Unlike the Foo Fighters’ website, they use as much of the middle of the page as possible while staying away from the outside edges of the page. It is a very simple website with their band’s name centered slightly too small at the top of the page followed by their latest album cover, a built in Spotify overlay for immediate listening, an embedded YouTube video, small icons for links to their social media, and a list of their upcoming tour dates. Aside from the transparent background of the framing of their tour dates, I like the scale of all the content on the page as it draws my attention instantly. The neatness of all the information gives me a pleasant experience the whole time I’m navigating through the website.

pinkfloyd.com

The last band’s website I looked at was Pink Floyd, a progressive rock band.

Upon initially entering the website, the scale of each of the six clickable pages on their website is quite nice and centered well on the page. There are thin white edges around each of the squares for each page and this contrasts well with the black background of the website to help frame your attention to the contents of their page. It is when you click on a few of the pages that the framing and scale start to become inconsistent. For example, on the planetarium shows page, there is a large picture that spans the full width of the page followed by a column of text and pictures that are different heights. I believe they should have centered the smaller picture above the text and spanned the text across the whole width of the larger picture at the top or somehow managed to cut the text to be closer to the height of the smaller picture. They do this on their recordings page but then run into the issue of having too much text again as there are no pictures accompanying the text.
