Activity #4: Structure Quest

Vishal Noonavath, DTC 355

For this activity, I looked at three bookstores, Half Price Books, Barnes and Noble, and Brick & Mortar Books, in Redmond, WA that all sell the book: “Statistics For Dummies” by Deborah J. Ramsey. Upon initially typing the title of the book into the search bar of each website, I was surprised to find that Brick and Mortar books, the only store that isn’t a chain, was the only website which had a list of books appear below the search bar with a small image of the book and the title and an arrow which I could click to go directly to the specific webpage of the store’s listing for the book. This was all before I even pressed enter and had the website show me all the other options for the book I could be looking for.

After I clicked on the specific webpage for the book’s listing for each website, I liked how Half Price Books and Brick and Mortar Books displayed the information about the book more than Barnes and Noble. The layout for the Barnes and Noble website seemed rather cluttered, improperly organized, and inconsistent with their color schemes. Personally, I felt like Half Price Books tried to use too much of the available space in the webpage to fit the content and thus created a lot of blank space. I liked Brick and Mortar Books’ page the best because it was succinct, had all the necessary information in a well-organized manner, and didn’t try to upsell you with recommendations for other books before all the sections of information were presented. The only criticism I would have for Brick and Mortar Books would be the type of font they used as it seemed rather basic.
